If a soldier needs to return to the states for a family emergency, the U.S. will provide transportation to one of three airports in the U.S. Until recently the soldier then had to pay his/her own freight back to his family from there. If a soldier is wounded and is brought to medical facilities in Germany or the United States the families had to pay their own way to visit and care for the wounded. Some of that has changed.
